Pine Wood Derby 09So I think I am having some sort of repressed memories coming back. For some reason I was dreading the Pine Wood Derby. This is our first year as parents involved with this fine tradition. As a kid I remember doing the “derby” once or twice but that we never placed very well or had a very unique car. Not that my parents did not try; to the contrary, I remember one year having the engineers at my Grandpa and Grandma’s shop work on said car. We still did not win….

Well I have gotten into it this year. I am not one of those win at all cost parents, but I really had fun this year helping build the cars. Thank goodness for the precut hobby store bought model and for Steve Alger helping with the cuts on the pencil car. With out this we would have been relegated to the triangle cut, slice of cheese mobile.

This year we have 2 entries. The 1st is the traditional fast type car. It is perfectly weighted and ready to go. The other one is the pencil car. Not so fast, but pretty clever looking.

I will post the updated results after the competition tomorrow. Stay tuned.

Look at the clearance on that pencil! I never knew they had dirt pine-wood derby tracks?

Our elders quorum did a pinewood derby last year. It was rad. We had an unlimited class (unlimited weight). So I strapped a Dewalt battery to the top of my car. It won…. but it also hit the end the track so hard that the car fell apart. So did I really win?

    Good luck.
